I’m Bill Rainey, a painter based in Whakatū/Nelson, New Zealand. My work is rooted in expressive realism, using acrylics to explore the emotional depth of landscapes. I paint places that speak to me, mountains, coastlines, skies, and I aim to capture not just their form, but their feeling.

A Journey in Paint

Art has always been part of my life, but in recent years it’s become something deeper. Painting is now a way of reflecting, of processing, of connecting. I often work early in the morning, when the world is quiet and the light is soft. These moments shape the mood of my work, sometimes serene, sometimes dramatic, always honest.

Artistic Style

My paintings are built with vibrant colour, layered texture, and bold composition. I lean into the emotional tone of a scene, letting intuition guide the brush. The result is work that feels alive, sometimes calm, sometimes raw, but always grounded in nature.

Themes and Inspiration

I’m inspired by the land, the weather, and the quiet awe that comes from standing still in a vast place. My work explores themes of wonder, solitude, connection, and memory. I want each painting to feel like a moment remembered, not just a scene observed.
